Washington, MO, Sept. 18, 2017- It was a final that nearly the entire racquetball world could have predicted at the 2017 Phase IV Scientific Health & Performance Pro/Am Open: #1 Kane Waselenchuk vs. #2 Rocky Carson.
From Sept. 7-10, over 30 professional racquetball players battled in the first Tier 1 tournament of the 2017-2018 International Racquetball Tour (IRT) season, which featured a men’s singles, men’s doubles and an IRT Futures draw.
Waselenchuk took home the men’s singles title after a three-game match final with Carson, winning 11-0,11-2,11-4. Starting the season with a Tier 1 victory is nothing new to Waselenchuk, who has won the first Tier 1 tournament on Tour for the last four years, dating back to the 2014-2015 season. All four of those victories coming against Carson in the finals.
The #1 ranked doubles team of Ben Croft and Waselenchuk were crowned men’s doubles champions as they defeated the duo of #3 ranked Daniel De La Rosa and Alvaro Beltran. De La Rosa and Beltran defeated the #7 ranked team of Felipe Camacho and Samuel Murray by scores of 15-10,15-8 to reach the finals. Croft and Waselenchuk defeated the #5 ranked team of Sebastian Franco and Mario Mercado by scores of 15-6,15-10 to reach the finals, where they defeated De La Rosa and Beltran by scores of 15-5,15-13.
In the IRT Futures draw, #2 ranked Andree Parrilla defeated #5 ranked David “Bobbie” Horn by scores of 11-6,11-6,11-9. Horn reached the finals after #1 ranked Mario Mercado was defeated by forfeit in the semi-finals match. Parrilla defeated #22 ranked Adam Manilla in the semi-finals before meeting Horn in the finals.
Next up for the IRT is the UnitedHealthcare U.S. Open Racquetball Championships from Oct. 4-8 at the Target Center in Minneapolis, MN. The IRT Network will be broadcasting live starting on Oct. 4 with Brian Pineda bringing you all the action throughout the week.
