ENats2012_150Logo

Under the fabled California sunshine into day turning to dusk, the revived 2011 Ektelon Nationals presented by Penn played on the clear court outside and inside the Meridian Club in Fullerton California last year. Then, #1 Kane Waselenchuk capped his second perfect season in a row. Now he’s returning to claim his 7th #1 title, a record in the pro ranks. Here’s a look at how he and the Top 8 look, and what we might expect to see in the season-ending grand slam starting Wednesday.

The Benefits of an Individual Sport

Ben_enatsbyrestrung_140Growing up playing baseball, basketball, football, and other team sports was an absolute blast and an experience I would never change. There is no question in my mind that team sports are the most popular amongst the majority of kids involved in social activities. There are many benefits and positive aspects we know of and maybe even some we don’t know of playing organized team sports, but what about individual sports? As great as being part of a team can be for a kid growing up, I think of all the ways playing an individual sport benefitted me and taught me invaluable lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Slumps and How to Deal with Them

franheadshot_150In the last Newsletter I talked about Illness and the Affect on Performance. Learning how to adjust your training, your racquetball drilling/playing and your mental toughness on and off the court when you are sick and feeling like you cannot get up for it is key. CharliePratt_140

To prepare for Ektelon Nationals presented by Penn, I have been working on my conditioning and overall strength. The last stage of preparation is to sharpen my skills and fine tune my game. “The training is done, that part of the break is over”, says my trainer. I take the week prior to a tournament very seriously because the little things can have a huge impact. I focus on every aspect of my game and my health and try to give 100% to each. If one falters, the rest of my game will unravel. Here are the 6 aspects of preparation that I focus on:

Kane Swings for “Best Ever” Title

Already among the Top 4 players to ever hit the professional ranks, Kane Waselenchuk steps onto the clear court swinging for  clear title to “best ever” based on yearend rankings. He tops Mike Yellen (1983-1987) and Sudsy Monchik (1999-2001; 1996-1997) who are tied at #3 with 5 yearend titles each and, at 6 titles (2004-2006; 2009-2011), Kane shares #2 with Cliff Swain (1990; 1993-1995; 1998). A win at Ektelon Nationals presented by Penn earns Kane the sole right to claim 7  #1 World Championships.
