HEAD Penn’s Marco Rojas of Stockton, Calif., of the University of the Pacific, won the Men’s Singles title at the 2016 U.S. National Intercollegiate Championships presented by Penn.
Marco Rojas, 22, 7th on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) 2015-2016 IRT season rankings, was the top men’s seed in the Championship after finishing as the runner-up in 2015. Reaching the finals with relative ease, Rojas defeated fellow Stocktonian David Horn, of California State University-Hayward, in a hard-fought three-game final 15-5, 14-15, 11-9. As a result of his win, Rojas earned a position on the 2016-2017 U.S.A. Racquetball National Team.
Rojas, along with his fellow University of the Pacific student IRT #18 and fellow HEAD Penn player, Jose Diaz, 22 of Stockton, Calif., took the Men’s Doubles title and vaulted the school to a third place Men’s Team finish as the only two players. Diaz also won the Men’s #2 Singles division in Tempe. Earlier this year, Diaz earned a position on the U.S.A. Racquetball National Team by winning the National Doubles Championships with partner IRT #16, Jake Bredenbeck.
Carla Muñoz, 24, of Livermore, Calif., of Las Positas College, ranked 16th on the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour and a member of the Chilean National Team, defeated defending champion Kelani Bailey, 22 of Shenandoah University in a close final 15-11, 13-15, 11-5. Bailey, as the top finishing U.S. citizen in the draw, again earned a spot on the 2016-17 U.S. National Team.In Women’s Doubles, Oregon State University students Erica Lipski and Lexi York took the title in convincing fashion while leading the Beavers to a Women’s Team title and ninth consecutive Overall Team championship.
