The Live Like John non-profit organization announces the second annual John Pelham Memorial racquetball tournament, scheduled for March 26, 2016 at the MAC Club in Portland, OR in memory of Specialist John Alexander Pelham. John, who was passionate about racquetball, was killed on February 12, 2014 while serving in Kapisa Province, Afghanistan, as part of the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
“The original event last year was a huge success. It surpassed my expectations in every respect,“ said Wendall Pelham, father of John Pelham. “The amount of support we received from all avenues—friends, the community, the media, businesses—was overwhelming. So, of course we are doing it again. This is a perfect way to both honor and support the families of our heroes who have made ultimate sacrifices for our country, while at the same time celebrating life.“
The entry fee is $35 for the first event and $10 for a second event, limited to the first 75 registrants. The tournament will include singles and doubles divisions for all levels, as well as a wheelchair racquetball exhibition. Additional donations are welcome, from players and non-players. Lunch, tournament t-shirts and other unique mementos will be provided for registered players. All net proceeds will be donated to four organizations dedicated to making life better for veterans, their families, and youth alike: Live Like John, the Military Racquetball Federation (MRF), the Green Beret Foundation, and the United States Army Special Operations Command (USASOC).
