A Day on the Court with Ben Croft: Pro Racquetball Training

One of the most frequent questions I’m asked throughout the season regards my on and off-season training schedule. It’s too hard to answer verbally, so I decided to write out a training day in the life of this professional racquetball player. Everyone has heard the saying “practice makes perfect” at least once in his or her life. Although I’m not a believer in practice creating perfection, I’m a huge believer in practice being the best way to improving your skill level. Here’s a typical day on the court for me:

Kill Ceiling Balls – Down the Line

-50 Forehands

-50 Backhands

Kill Ceiling Balls – Splats

-50 Forehands

-50 Backhands

Pinch Drill – 20 Shots x3 sets

-20 Consecutive Pinches alternating from forehand to backhand. (This drill is meant to improve footwork and cardio, so NO stopping the ball for any reason. This drill should take about 45 seconds – 90 seconds.)

Off the Back Wall

-25 Forehand DTL’s – 25 Forehand Splats

-25 Backhands DTL’s – 25 Backhand Splats

(Start in center-court position, hit the ball about 40-50 mph about 5 feet high on the front wall so it comes off the back wall only a few feet. Always start in center and shuffle your feet so your momentum is moving into the ball.)

Wide Angle Drill

-25 Forehand DTL’s

-25 Backhand DTL’s

(Starting in center court, hit a wide-angle pass so it comes off the back wall enough for you to setup and kill the ball. Always start in center court and shuffle your feet so you’re hitting with a powerful, balanced stance. If you’re hitting your backhand side, the drill starts with hitting a backhand wide angle.)

Drive and Lob Serves

-25 DTL Serves

-25 Cross-court serves

-25 Drive Z’s to the right, 25 Drive Z’s to the left.

After this on-court training, you should be pretty fried! Just like every workout, you will get out of it what you put into it, so go in with a goal to complete every drill! A big key to improving your skills is to change up the way you practice so your game doesn’t get stagnant. Just like working out, your body will get used to doing the same exercises and drills over and over again, and you will reach a plateau. If you go into a practice with an itinerary of what you want to do, you will be much more likely to follow through with the goals you’ve set for yourself. So write it out the night before, take it to the gym, and cross it off as you finish!
