With a pair of national championships and a world championship already under his belt, the IRT’s #2 ranked pro, Rocky Carson, added to his impressive 2014 year with a win in the men’s singles division at 2014 World Outdoor Racquetball (WOR) Championships in Huntington Beach, California, July 10-July 13, 2014. This win gives Carson his 10th WOR title, making him the most decorated outdoor player ever.
Carson defeated retired IRT pro Josh Tucker 15-8, 15-12 for the title after winning his semifinal match against #5 Daniel De La Rosa 15-2, 12-15, 11-7 in a tough tiebreaker. Tucker had to play through a semifinal tiebreaker of his own, coming out ahead 15-14, 10-15, 11-7 against the men’s professional International Racquetball Tour Head Referee, #12 Charlie Pratt. The IRT’s #12 Jose Diaz also competed in the event, falling to De La Rosa in the quarterfinals.
#9 seed Cliff Swain/Josh Tucker won the Men’s Doubles Outdoor Pro division in a two-game final against #7 Greg Lane/Scott Davis. The #1 seed team of Daniel De La Rosa/Alvaro Beltran suffered an early blow when Beltran had to pull out of the tournament due to injury. Rob Mijares replaced the injured player, but the De La Rosa/Mijares duo lost in the quarterfinals to the #16 seed, Jose Diaz/Marco Rojas.
Diaz/M. Rojas 15-7, 6-15, 11-10 win carried them to the semifinals, where they faced and fell to the #9 seed, Cliff Swain/Tucker, who took the match in two games, 15-8, 15-6. The IRT’s #6 ranked pro, Ben Croft, also competed in the event as the #10 seed, pairing with Rod Frontino to face #7 Greg Lane/Scott Davis in the quarterfinals where Frontino/Croft won, 15-10, 15-4 only to lose to Lane/Davis in the semifinals 10-15, 4-15.
Swain/Tucker went on to win against #5 Rocky Carson/Jose Rojas 15-5, 15-10 in the semifinals for the right to face #7 Greg Lane/Scott Davis for the championship, 15-5, 15-0.
